IRONMAN SOUTH AFRICA MEDIA STATEMENT
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa – After a challenging 2020 which saw numerous sporting events cancelled around the world, the IRONMAN South Africa team has been hard at work in making sure athletes can return to the race courses in 2021 in a safe and enjoyable manner.
IRONMAN’s Safe Return to Racing guidelines will apply to all 2021 IRONMAN South Africa events and will be at the core as our team continues to develop and refine operational plans with local authorities and agencies that follow guidelines and recommendations in a manner consistent with local community objectives and within the expectations set by public health entities as it relates to COVID-19.
The IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa triathlon taking place on January 24, 2021, in Buffalo City will go ahead as scheduled. The number of athletes allowed to enter the race has been limited and race operational plans developed to ensure compliance with current South African Government COVID-19 restrictions on event numbers.
The 2021 IRONMAN African Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay from March 14, 2021, will be rescheduled for November 21, 2021, due to these same event limitations. The 2021 Isuzu Corporate Triathlon Challenge, powered by Algoa FM in Nelson Mandela Bay from March 13, 2021 will be rescheduled for November 20, 2021. Like our athletes, we are disappointed but look forward to welcoming athletes back for an exceptional race experience in November 2021.
At this time, the IRONMAN 70.3 Durban taking place on June 6, 2021, and the 5150 Triathlon Series later in 2021 are set to go ahead as scheduled.
We thank all athletes who enjoy our events in South Africa and can’t wait to get back to in-person racing soon.
