As the sun began to peek through the misty sky, a group of determined swimmers gathered at Granger Bay in Cape Town, ready to embark on a thrilling adventure. Their mission? As I write this I’m wondering, because I’m in a particularly lazy mood, if there is really any point to putting words to these images of the latest Speedo Island Escape on the 13th of April. Speedo island Escape March 2021. It was a good day for a 7.5km Robben Island to Big Bay swim. No wind at all, flat seas, and lots of sun. The only minor blemish was an average sea temp of 12°C. Luckily I only had to watch. Speedo Robben Island Escape December 2020: The December 2020 version of the Robben Island Escape started with the usual nervous boat boarding for the shuttle to Robben Island at 6:00 am. How To Photograph a Dolphin. So you want to photograph a dolphin? Who doesn’t? Doing it is nothing like you would imagine though. It’s both incredibly difficult and very easy at the same time. The difficult part is getting the dolphin in front of the camera. Firstly, you need a boat and a skipper and about 15 trips out to a part of the sea that dolphins are known to frequent. I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot the Speedo open water swim clinic at Elgin River Lodge near Grabouw. The day was a fund raiser to help get Olympic open water swimmer Michelle Weber to the 2021 Olympic Games. Participants learnt some skills and techniques from Michelle and had a practical session in the chilly Palmiet River, which due to a good rain season is full to the brim. The Speedo Robben Island Escape Open Water Swim Event has been created to provide both, novice and experienced swimmers, with the opportunity to tick off that bucket list swim – the Robben Island crossing, while participating in a formal event. This open water swim covers a distance of approximately 7.4km from Robben Island to Big Bay, an iconic swim with a backdrop like none other.
