Hot. It was very hot. But the racing was even hotter. (Go King of cliches). On a weekend that turned into a celebration of cross country mountain biking that saw the cream of the crop in South Africa meet at the Bloemendal Trail Park on the outside of Durbanville near Cape Town, the intense heat was the big equaliser. Manage your temperature and look after your bike, and the rest will be easy. That at least was the theory. ItClick to read more and to see the event image gallery
As I write this I’m wondering, because I’m in a particularly lazy mood, if there is really any point to putting words to these images of the latest Speedo Island Escape on the 13th of April. The weather was perfect. So perfect in fact that the sea was reflecting the clouds languidly (ooh fancy) floating in the hazy sky. You can see it in some of the photos. If you need words, let me direct you to this previous IslandClick to read more and to see the event image gallery
Speedo island Escape March 2021. It was a good day for a 7.5km Robben Island to Big Bay swim. No wind at all, flat seas, and lots of sun. The only minor blemish was an average sea temp of 12°C. Luckily I only had to watch. The Island Escape Open Water Swim Event has been created to provide both, novice and experienced swimmers, with the opportunity to tick off that bucket list swim – the Robben Island crossing, while participatingClick to read more and to see the event image gallery

As part of my project to document all of the trails built and run by the TBMBC, week one showcases the Contermanskloof MTB Trails. This is one of the many jewels in the crown of the Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club, and it’s the most central, being nestled between other club trails at Meerendal, Hoogekraal, Bloemendal, and Hillcrest. The farm offers a range of trails from green routes for the novice to advanced black category trails for those who like toClick to read more and to see the event image gallery
The joys of exploring locally. Yesterday we took our free puppy Kayla to the recently opened walking and trail-running trail at Hoogekraal Farm near Durbanville. It’s a 5.6 km loop with 180 meters of climbing and it is all on jeep track and a lot of custom-built single track. The walking trails are well separated from the established mountain bike trails except for a 200 meter section of jeep track at the very top where the cyclists are no threatClick to read more and to see the event image gallery
Greetings from Piket-Bo-Berg Trails! The U 2021 Date Announced. We’re all about Spring here in our fruit-farming valley. It’s a beaut of a time in the Southern Hemi. For that reason, we’ve decided to bring our boutique stage race, The U, a few weeks earlier, right into the heart of Spring. Of course, this won’t affect our exclusive offering and we’ll be sure to create a more than ‘EPIC’ experience with our incredible hospitality, personal touches, mind-blowing trails and scenic raceClick to read more and to see the event image gallery
Trilogy Trail Run 2020: When you drive to a Stellenbosch trail run and the sun is in your eyes shining out of a clear blue sky, and the hot air balloons are already floating languidly across the horizon, then you know that it’s not only going to be a cracker of a morning, but the photographer is going to wax lyrical about it as well. Thanks, Dirtopia, for saving a race calendar from the nothingness that COVID 2020 turned into.Click to read more and to see the event image gallery
Speedo Robben Island Escape December 2020: The December 2020 version of the Robben Island Escape started with the usual nervous boat boarding for the shuttle to Robben Island at 6:00 am. Below perfectly clear skies, the sun that promised a pleasantly warm day was only now popping the top of its lazy head over the horizon. All of this belied the unseen preparations behind the scenes that had seen the boat skippers crawling out of bed at 3:30 am toClick to read more and to see the event image gallery
